This cruise is part of a collection of PONANT voyages that are specially-tailored for English-speaking travellers who want to engage with the world. In addition to the usual elements of the PONANT experience, the listed price for these voyages includes transfers to and from the ship, talks and discussions aboard ship by world class experts, and a shore excursion or activity in each port of call that encourages guests to embrace the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of the local environment and culture.
This 16-day cruise aboard Le Lapérouse, designed to explore the natural wonders of eastern Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and the Kimberley region of Australia, has been specially adapted to include observation of the total eclipse of the sun that will occur on April 20, 2023.
Setting sail from fabled Bali, your expedition begins with two days of swimming, snorkeling, and hiking in Komodo National Park, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1989, and home to unique flora and fauna, including the emblematic Komodo Dragon. A day at sea brings you to the northern coast of Timor-Leste, where you will discover the history and culture of this recently independent country in the capital city of Dili.
Heading south across the Timor Sea, you arrive in Wyndham, Western Australia, gateway to the Kimberley region. Devote three days to the exploration of this great wilderness area, including a Zodiac™ tour of King George River and a sampling of the aboriginal rock art of Swift Bay. You will also have the opportunity to cruise the Ord River, fly over the fascinating Bungle Bungle mountains, or explore one of the world's last remaining frontiers in El Questro.
Next comes the centerpiece of your expedition, as Le Lapérouse sails back into the Timor Sea to take up a position in the path of totality of the solar eclipse, which will last for more than three hours from late morning to early afternoon on April 20, with an approximate period of totality of just over one minute.
Returning to the Kimberley, enjoy three more days of exploration, including the world-famous Montgomery Reef, revealed each day by massive tides, the "Horizontal Falls" of Talbot Bay, described by Sir David Attenborough as 'one of the greatest wonders of the natural world', and the rich breeding ground for Green Turtles, Brown Boobies, Roseate Terns, and many other species in the Lacepede Islands.
Your voyage ends in the resort town of Broome in Western Australia.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.
Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.
Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.

Between the islands of Sumbawa and Florès, Komodo National Park welcomes you to discover its natural wonders. At the very heart of the Indonesian archipelago, the three islands that form it – Komodo, Rinca and Padar - owe their renown to the famous eponymous dragons, enormous lizards over two metres long, which live in its grassy savannah. This jagged and hilly volcanic territory belonging to the Sunda Islands is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its incredible terrestrial and marine biodiversity. Admire its palette of colours, intermingling the sparkling whites of the beaches, the deep blues of the coral-filled water and the soft greens of its pastures.

The journey up the King George River is nothing short of breathtaking. The 80-metre-high sides of the gorge display varying degrees of weathering of the ancient Warton sandstone. The colours and textures of the gorge change with the light as you travel further up the river creating a continual changing scenery that is simply stunning. The journey culminates at the King George twin falls; the highest single-drop falls in the whole of the Kimberley (80 m or 260 ft). Fed by wet season run-off the level of water cascading over the falls varies from year to year. Your Expedition Team will escort you in either the zodiacs or ships tenders to the foot of the twin falls, and explain all about the stunning geological formations of the canyon.

Departure 18/4/2023
The Bonaparte Archipelago, is a stunningly rugged maze of islands stretching almost 150 km along Western Australia's remote Kimberley coast. Its colour and scale conspire to take ones’ breath away. Its distant location has meant it has remained an unspoilt and remarkably pristine location to explore and experience. Phillip Parker King named “Swift's bay" after Jonathon Swift (1667-1745) the author of Gulliver’s travels. The ‘T’ shaped bay is composed of heavily fractured sandstone providing an abundance of rock shelters. On the walls of these shelters are examples of both Wandjina and Gwion Gwion style rock art. Join your expedition team ashore for a guided walk to a number of rock art galleries depicting these unique rock art styles.

Lying to the east of the Buccaneer archipelago, the ancient landscapes of Collier Bay have been shaped by the massive tidal movements the region is renowned for, creating a photographer’s paradise. With a tidal range exceeding 14 metres, recorded near Yule entrance at the southern end of the bay, they are among the largest in the world. This massive daily movement of water creates unique phenomena that occur nowhere else in the world. Nestled in the centre of the Bay is Montgomery Reef, the world’s largest inshore reef system. As the tide falls a raging torrent of water cascades off the top of the reef, creating turbulent ‘rivers’ and mini waterfalls. At the Southern end of the Bay, Talbot Bay is home to the world’s only ’Horizontal Falls’ described by Sir David Attenborough as “One of the greatest wonders of the natural world.” Hidden in the many caves and grottos of this ancient landscape are a multitude of ancient Rock Art galleries. Here you can find spectacular examples of the Wandjina and Gwion Gwion styles.
As we are at the mercy of weather and tide conditions in this region, the activities mentioned above are only possible experiences and can’t be guaranteed.

The Lacepede Islands are Western Australia’s most important breeding habitat for Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas), and have been named by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA). The breeding colony of Brown Boobies is possibly the largest in the world. Up to 20,000 Roseate Terns have also been recorded here. Other birds breeding on the islands include Masked Boobies, Australian Pelicans, Lesser Frigatebirds, Eastern Reef Egrets, Silver Gulls, Crested, Bridled and Lesser Crested Terns, Common Noddies, Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers. Join your expedition team for a guided zodiac tour to view the prolific wildlife. Due to the sensitive nature of the environment, landings are prohibited on the Lacepede Islands.

Disembarkation 24/4/2023 at 9:00 am
Located in the northwest of the Kimberley region and in the far north of Western Australia, the town of Broome is reputed for its history and its glorious pearling era. The fascinating Chinatown district, which is the historic city centre, and the famous Japanese Cemetery, dates back to 1896, and has a past marked by the immigration of numerous Chinese and Japanese workers, attracted by the prosperous pearl industry at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. Broome is also famous for the “Staircase to the Moon”, an optical illusion created by the Moon reflecting on the sand banks at low tide, like a staircase climbing up towards the sky, a unique spectacle provided by nature…
An hour-long drive through scenic landscape bordering nature reserves brings you to Lake Kununurra, a man-made lake at the northern end of the Ord River irrigation system, created between 1963 and 1972 by damming the river in two places. Intended primarily to provide water for farming sugar cane and other cash crops, the dams also created both Lake Kununurra and the much larger Lake Argyle to the south.
On arrival in Kununurra, board purpose-built river boats for a leisurely cruise along the 35-mile stretch of river between the two lakes, passing through an area of mangrove forests, lagoons, and floodplains rich in wildlife and natural beauty. For those who enjoy bird-watching, the Ord River provides the best birding opportunity of the entire Kimberley voyage. You may also spot Freshwater crocodiles. Snacks are available on the boats, and a buffet lunch will be served at a the riverside camp along the way.
Disembarking your boat in Lake Argyle, you will enjoy a short tour of the lake's shoreline and a visit to Historic Durack Homestead, the home built by the famous pioneering family who brought cattle ranching to the Kimberley. After your visit, return by a two-hour motorcoach ride to Wyndham.
Included
A scenic drive from Wyndham brings you to a small airport in Kununurra at the northern edge of the Ord River Irrigation Area, the starting point for a panoramic flight over the awe-inspiring landscape of Lake Argyle, Purnululu National Park, and the iconic Bungle Bungle massif.
Your pilot will brief you on the flight plan and arrange seating aboard according to the weight and balance requirements of the aircraft. Then comes takeoff and one of the most memorable sightseeing adventures to be had anywhere. Fly over Lake Kununurra and past the Diversion Dam that creates it, taking in views of the entire Ord River floodplain before crossing the Carr Boyd Range to Lake Argyle. Enjoy aerial views of the Ord Dam and its hydro power station, as well as the full expanse of the lake—Australia's second largest fresh-water reservoir.
Continue southward past Lissadell Homestead, over the Osmand Range and on to Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle massif. This World Heritage-listed site is a marvel when viewed from ground level. From an aircraft it is absolutely stunning. The orange and black stripes across the beehive-like mounds, encased in a skin of silica and algae, are clearly visible from the air, as is a hidden world of gorges and pools, with fan palms clinging precariously to walls and crevices in the rocks. After ample time here to appreciate the unique beauty that surrounds you, return to home base via a route that includes a flyover of the Argyle Diamond Mine.
Included
Encompassing nearly 700,000 largely unexplored acres in the heart of the Kimberley, El Questro Wilderness Park is the very essence of the Outback—a region of ancient gorges and waterfalls, rivers and streams, and seemingly endless vistas of rugged countryside dotted with waterholes of lush vegetation.
From the pier in Wyndham, a one-hour drive through the Outback brings you to spectacular Emma Gorge. Your experience of El Questro begins here, with a brisk one-hour walk, led by a park ranger, through the gorge and ending at a large waterhole at the base of a 215-feet-tall waterfall. Take a refreshing swim, or simply rest beneath the towering cliffs. Returning on the same path to the coach, continue to Zebedee Springs, where a short hike through a forest of Livistona and Pandanus Palms opens onto a series of pools fed by thermal springs that keep the water temperature at an inviting 90 degrees.
Enjoy a lunch of "Beef or Barra" at The Steakhouse restaurant at El Questro Station.
Your very full day comes to an end with the return trip to Wyndham.
Included
Today Le Lapérouse will be anchored in Talbot Bay, and her fleet of Zodiacs will be exploring the dramatic cliffs of Cyclone Creek and the Horizontal Falls—an area described by Sir David Attenborough as "one of the greatest wonders of the natural world."
The "Horizontal Waterfalls" are actually a fast-moving tidal current squeezing through two narrow gorges, pushing the water into rapids-like formations that rush through the gaps at such a high rate of speed that they produce what appear to be waterfalls turned on their side. Although the ship's Zodiacs can bring you close to the falls, they will not enter them at peak flow. If you wish to experience the falls during full tidal movement, you need a larger, faster boat.
A local outfitter has three fast, rigid-hulled inflatables based at the falls that are available to give you a short thrill ride through the fast-moving waters. Board these purpose-built vessels from Le Lapérouse's Marina Deck and speed through the gaps in the sandstone walls to experience the foaming rapids up close.

Perennially listed as one of the best travel destinations in the world by Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast, Bali is rich in both culture and natural beauty. This program is designed to introduce you to both, but at a pace that respects the importance of relaxation and wellness as much as discovery.
Day 1 – Bali, Indonesia
Arrive at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, where you will be met and transferred to the InterContinental Bali Resort in Jimbaran Bay, your home for the next three nights. The remainder of the day is at leisure with independent meals.
Day 2 – Bali
Today is devoted to taking advantage of the services and amenities of your 5-star resort. Swim and relax at one of its six pools, treat yourself to a massage in the award-winning spa, enjoy the sun and sand on the private beach, work out in the state-of-the-art fitness center—the possibilities are endless. This evening, join fellow travelers for a welcome cocktail reception at the hotel. Dinner is on your own.
Day 3 – Bali
After breakfast at the hotel, depart on a full-day excursion to central Bali. Begin with a panoramic drive through the lush vegetation of the Balinese countryside to arrive at the small village of Batuan, where you explore the 1,000-year-old Batuan Temple, dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple is a well-preserved example of the artistic genius of Balinese Hinduism, both in its architecture and in its decoration of intricately carved stone. The temple grounds also display the local style of painting, which has become a major attraction since the 1930s. From Batuan, travel further inland to Tegallalang, famous for its terraced rice paddies and, because it is located nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, for its vistas over the island. After a sumptuous Balinese lunch at a restaurant in Ubud, the hill town at the center of the Indonesian portion of Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir, Eat Pray Love, visit a Batik Workshop and Gallery, where you will discover how batik is made and have an opportunity to purchase the colorful fabrics before returning to the hotel.
Day 4 – Bali | Embarkation
After breakfast, check out from the hotel and join an excursion to Uluwatu Temple on the southern tip of the island. Dating to the 10th-century, this temple built of black coral and jutting into the ocean, is one of seven sea temples that protect Bali from evil spirits. Because of its location high on a sheer cliff, it offers stunning views of the island and of the Indian Ocean. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before transferring to Benoa Harbor to embark Le Laperouse in late afternoon.
