Set sail aboard Le Lyrial for a 8-day cruise along the Italian coastline. Enjoy an unforgettable interlude of La Dolce Vita from Rome, the Eternal City, to the Maltese capital, Valletta.
Sailing from Civitavecchia, your ship will first head toward Gaeta. Clinging to the cliffs facing the crystal clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the former ancient city of narrow alleyways will fascinate you with its history and enchant you with its many architectural treasures, like its cathedral, an elegant Romanesque and Moorish building decorated with ceramic tiles.
You will explore Amalfi and Positano, sublime towns along the famous Amalfi coast. Suspended between sky and sea, this strip of land overlooking the sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts exceptional natural beauty and a unique architecture.
A little further south, you will discover the Aeolian islands and, while at sea, the amazing sight of the Stromboli volcano, an active volcano whose crater regularly erupts with lava flows. Lipari is the capital of the Aeolian volcanic archipelago and is particularly known for its many natural and architectural gems.
Le Lyrial will then chart a course to magnificent Sicily. In Palermo, the soul of Sicily exudes the perfumes of picturesque markets while history unveils itself. Its 12th-century cathedral and its Teatro Massimo opera house - one of the largest in Europe - make its city centre a real treasure chest with multiple cultural influences.
You will then take the sea once again to discover Taormina, overlooking Etna’s blanket of snow. Its streets will lead you to its famed ancient Greek theatre, where the quality of the acoustics is exceptional.
Then, you will set sail for Syracuse, one of the most prestigious Sicilian cities, whose monuments are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.
Your cruise will come to an end in Valletta, former stronghold of the Knights of the Order of Malta.

Gaeta takes its name from the legend of the nanny of Aeneas. This illustrious relationship can be seen in the nobility of this old town, built on a peninsula, at the end of a headland. In Roman times, Gaeta was already a renowned seaside destination; it fell under Byzantine domination then became an autonomous duchy and an independent republic. The fortifications that surround this ancient fort remind us of this rich history, as does the cathedral bell tower, an elegant building of both Roman and Moor influence, decorated with ceramic in the style of bell-towers of Amalfi.

The little town of Campania gives its name to the region containing the magnificent, UNESCO World Heritage listed, Amalfi coast. And for good reason. Located at the foot of Mount Cerreto, against a rock face of a gorge that opens onto the sea, Amalfi’s absolutely splendid natural scenery alone is enough to feast your eyes on before making for the medieval streets to explore some of its history. The mix of cultural influences from the Mediterranean Rim is omnipresent here.

Positano, emblematic village on the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will fascinate you with its exceptional natural setting. Tumbling down the cliffs overlooking the Tyrolean Sea, the picturesque and colourful colour palette of its buildings will enchant your eyes. This village, emblematic of the dolce vita, will delight you with its lively terraces, its designer boutiques and its direct access to the sea. The hike along the Path of the Gods offers a magnificent panoramic view over the sea and the islands, including the Sirenusas, which are believed to have inspired Homer to write the Odyssey. Of the seven Aeolian islands, this is the largest and the most populated. Lying off the north coast of Sicily, in the Tyrrhenian sea, Lipari is one of UNESCO’s marvellous World Heritage sites. Its lava stone quarries and obsidian flow of Rocce Rosse are indications of its volcanic nature. The town, the largest urban area in the whole archipelago, proudly houses its citadel and its castle, both rooted in Antiquity. If you head further into the centre, you’ll be surprised to come across a Norman cathedral, complete with a magnificent baroque façade.

Palermo is the guardian of the Sicilian soul. Many have been attracted to this city, the largest capital of the Italian islands. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans... Palermo is a rich culmination of so many cultural influences as seen in the Moorish designs on the cathedral, and the Byzantine mosaics of the Palatine chapel, which is itself housed within the precincts of the Norman palace. Described by Cicero as “the most beautiful city in the world”, Syracuse was one of the most prestigious cities in Sicily and at her height was even a rival for Athens. A central city of Ancient Greece, it was home to a succession of civilisations, each of which has left their mark. The blend of Arabic, Roman, Norman, Byzantine and Spanish cultures makes Syracuse a town that is extraordinarily rich in fragrances, colours and flavours.

The whole of the Maltese capital Valletta is UNESCO World Heritage listed and occupies a peninsula in the north-east of the island. From the fountain of Tritons to Saint-Elme fort, there are as many majestic streets as there are narrow staircase vennels to explore. The painted loggia and carved corbels on the tall houses will accompany you in your explorations, and you’ll rarely be bothered by traffic. You can visit the Grandmasters palace decorated with coats of arms and frescoes. Saint-John’s cathedral and the ramparts which have guarded the city since the 16th century are also among the most emblematic sites of the city. Arranged in terraces, the Barrakka Gardens will punctuate your promenade with a green and floral experience.
A twist of Amalfi
From the pier, you will meet your guide and board your minibus for a 30-minute drive, losing yourself in the radiant blue of sea and sky of one of the world's most spectacular coasts. Your panoramic journey will lead you to a charming lemon garden located in Conca dei Marini village. Once a small fishing village, this pearl of the Amalfitan coast is impeccably preserved. Here, you will enjoy a guided visit by a local expert with explanations about the significance and history of the lemon, considered as valuable as gold in Amalfi.
Leaving the garden, you will arrive at a nearby restaurant with panoramic views above the sea. Here, you will have the nice experience of preparing the Limoncello together with the Chef before sitting down to a lemon-scented 4 courses lunch.
After lunch you will reboard your minibus and return to Amalfi for a guided visit. This beautiful and historic city, dating to early Roman rule, has preserved its medieval charm in the city center. Stroll the narrow streets of the Piazza del Duomo on your way to the Cathedral of St. Andrew, built in 987 by the Duke of Amalfi Mansone. This Baroque cathedral houses relics of Andrew which seem to contain "manna" with miraculous properties
Finally, you will board a local motorboat and return to Positano where you will walk through the main center to the tender landing pier, back to your ship.
- Amalfi’s city center is pedestrian only and mainly flat. The inside visit of the Cathedral involves 62 steps. Positano’s main city center is pedestrian-only, and involves downhill and uphill walking over uneven surfaces, with stairs to negotiate. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Appropriate clothing is recommended to enter religious sites: shoulders and knees must be covered. Due to the nature of the Amalfi Drive, this tour operates in compact minibuses; air-conditioning may not be as effective as in large coaches.

Amalfi & the Emerald Grotto
From the pier, you will board a motor launch to reach the astonishing and colourful Grotta dello Smeraldo (the Emerald grotto) not far from the Amalfi centre. Enjoy the beauty of the Amalfi coast by cruising to the grotto and once there, on board local boats, experience the emotion of such a suggestive natural spot with its shining emerald green shades.
Discovered in 1932, explorers found a unique cave formation stretching 30 metres (100 feet) high by 60 metres (200 feet) wide, hidden along the coastline. The most fascinating aspect of this cave is the underwater entrance 12 metres (30 feet) deep that allows the sunlight to enter the cave, creating a luminescent Emerald Glow.
At the end of the visit, your launch will drive you back to Amalfi to drop you off in the main square where you will visit the impressive Cathedral of the town and spend some time to browse around and taste local specialities like the Limoncello Liquor.
- Operation of tour is subject to the weather conditions of the day. Participants must be able to embark and disembark the local boats and negotiate 60 steps to visit the cathedral. Proper attire is recommended to visit the inside of the Cathedral (shoulders and knees covered). No explanation inside the Cathedral when holy service is performed. Ravello
From Amalfi harbour, you will reach Ravello by coach after a 40-minute drive following the narrow main road which stretches along the side of rocky cliffs, overlooking the sea. Every twist and turn of the road offer new and breathtaking views on the world famous Sorrentine peninsula. You will see the rocks rising out of the sea like strange mythological creatures and the small boats in sheltered sandy coves that look like brightly coloured toys from up above.
Ravello is a small city of ancient origins which faces a range of hills overlooking the clear blue sea of the gulf of Salerno. The beauties of this area have inspired poets, painters and musicians during its millennia-old history.
On arrival you will be visiting Villa Rufolo where Wagner stayed. The magical beauties of its gardens and the architecture of the cloisters inspired him for “the Garden of Klingsor”. You will also admire the numerous arches and antique towers as well as the Cathedral, outside visit only.
You will finally drive back to Amalfi, where you will enjoy a soft drink or an ice cream at a local bar.

Panorama of the Aeolian Islands
Lipari is the largest and most populated of the Aeolian Islands. Famous since olden times for its obsidian quarries, the town and port are dominated by a citadel, testimony to the archipelago’s strategic importance in the past.
Leaving from the port by coach you will take a tour of the island. Your first stop stop is the Quattrocchi viewpoint, one of the archipelago’s most striking panoramas. Here you can admire the volcanic peaks of Jacopo and Perciato, against a backdrop of Vulcano Island. There are also other good spots to see the island of Salina, the pumice stone quarries and the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow.
The coach then heads to the centre of Lipari where your excursion will continue on foot. Lipari’s historic centre is dominated by a Castle built on the promontory. Its construction dates back to ancient times, with a tower forming part of Greek fortifications of the 4th and 5th centuries BC, medieval towers from the 13th century, and surrounding walls from the Spanish period. Inside there are numerous archaeological remains as well as the Norman Cathedral Saint Bartolomeo (only outside visit) dating from 1084 and which has a Baroque facade. On the sides, you will notice the ruins of a Norman Abbey. You will also visit the Aeolian Archaeological Museum revealing the evolution of the islands in the active volcano system. You can go into the “classic” section where objects from Lipari and the other islands, from prehistoric times to the Greek and Roman periods, are presented.
- Photography and video are not allowed inside the museum. This excursion involves 1 hour of walking over uneven grounds with some steps. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. From the pier to the coach, you will have to walk 550 yards (500 metres), and 20 minutes to the museum on narrow streets.

Lipari Island & Italian cooking
From the pier, begin your tour with a walk through the town of Lipari, main city of the Aeolian Islands. The pastel-coloured houses of this little port contrast with the rugged and typically Mediterranean landscape that can be seen in the rest of the island.
A one-and-fifteen-hour scenic drive will give you the opportunity to discover this volcanic island and enjoy some stunning panoramas, including the Quattrocchi viewpoint, where you will admire the volcanic peaks of Jacopo and Perciato, against a backdrop of Vulcano Island, one of the most iconic island of the Aeolian archipelago.
In a local pizzeria, the owner will show you how to make this world famous national dish and give you the chance to realise your own pizza and personalise it with your favourite ingredients. Finally, you will taste your tailor-made pizza, accompanied with some wine and other Aeolian delicacies.
After the tasting, you will re-embark your coach for the drive back to the pier.

Palermo & Monreale
From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic fifteen-minute drive through the main streets of Palermo passing by the Piazza Ruggero Settimo, Politeama Square, Massimo Opera House, and the Cathedral.
Located on a wide bay beneath the shadow of Mount Pellegrino, Palermo is a jewel in the crown of Sicily. In the 9th century, Palermo was famed for the wealth of its court and its universities. Today, it is an international famed city with modern day treasures and priceless ancient monuments of architecture and art.
Your stop will be made at the Palatine Chapel, the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily located on the ground floor of the Palazzo Reale in Palermo, where you will enjoy a guided visit. The chapel was commissioned by Roger II of Sicily in 1132 to be built upon an older chapel (now the crypt) constructed around 1080. It took eight years to build it and many more to decorate it with mosaics and fine art.
Back on your coach, you will travel to Monreale, where you will visit its Cathedral, the Duomo.
The Cathedral of Monreale is one of the greatest extant examples of Norman architecture in the world. It was begun in 1174 by William II, and in 1182 the church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral. The church is a national monument of Italy and one of the most important attractions of Sicily. You will also visit the Benedictine’s cloister; the courtyard is enclosed by an arcade supported by 216 sets of twin columns, each with a different design and richly decorated capitals.
After some free time for shopping, re-board your coach for the thirty-minute return drive to the pier and your ship.
- This tour involves approximately 0.6 mile (1 km) of walking on flat streets with 90 steps to negotiate from the coach parking to the Monreale Cathedral. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Flash photography is not allowed inside the Palatine Chapel nor the Cathedral. Appropriate dress is recommended when visiting religious sites (shoulders and knees must be covered).

Cefalù
From the pier, embark your coach and start your panoramic drive through the historical centre of Palermo, before reaching the coastal highway which will bring you to the charming fishing village of Cefalù.
Cefalù is a haven of tranquillity, a refuge and a sanctuary of religious inspiration. A city of facets, levels, and epochs. The name, which translated means "head", probably referring to the shape of the hill and huge rock crowned with an ancient castle, rising above the town, was given to the town by the Greeks. Cefalù's origins are surrounded in mystery.
Legend tells that Roger II, the well-known Norman sovereign of Sicily, in gratitude to God for sparing his life in a violent storm at sea, commissioned the building of a Cathedral at Cefalù, where he landed after the tempest.
Its characteristics, as well as its position, so close to the sea, make it something of a fortress from the outside as much as it is a church on the inside. The Cathedral was begun on a site in which Roman buildings had already existed. However, after unforeseen circumstances, and changes in construction plans, the original building was never finished. The remains of this building project are three roofs which testify to past ages and building techniques. Inside the cathedral, you will see the paintings and gold Byzantine mosaics the Cathedral is known for.
Continue your walking tour with a photo-stop at the medieval wash-house and the Osterio Magno. Per the tradition, it was built by Roger II as his mansion, but it probably dates from the 14th century. Traces of the medieval tower and decoration can be seen. Excavations held in the interior have showed the presence of ancient edifices and ceramics.
Before returning to the ship, a refreshment will be served and you will have some free time to explore Cefalù on your own and browse the quaint boutiques.

Mount Etna & winery visit and tasting
From the pier, you will board you coach for a drive up the winding roads that work their way along the slopes of Mt. Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe.
Your tour begins with a drive through the small town of Naxos, which was found by Greek colonisers in the 8th century B.C., and then pass the town of Giarre and the villages of Santa Venerina and Zafferana en route. Your destination on Mt. Etna is the Crateri Silvestri area, which features a collection of inactive craters that originated during the massive eruption of 1892. From here, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Gulf of Catania and vineyards.
After taking time to appreciate the power of this site, continue to the Benanti Winery, Monte Serra Estate, where you will join vintners for a visit of the vineyards and the historic oak barrel room.
After the visit, you will enjoy a typical Sicilian lunch and sample several of the winery’s finest vintages. It's a delightful experience that will leave you with an even greater understanding and appreciation of Sicilian flavours.
Finally, you will board your coach for the return drive to your ship.

Sicilian cooking class with Mrs Consoli
From the ship, you will reach the pier by tender. From here, you will board your coach for a 45-minute drive through the small town of Naxos, founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century B.C., and then drive to Catania by motorway.
Once in Catania you will walk to the centre, where the most ancient and typical markets await you. With the assistance of a local expert, you will discover local products like vegetables, fruits, and fishes, used in Mediterranean cuisine. Enjoy the wealth of colours and the Sicilian folklore.
You will then reboard your coach and drive to Viagrande. Situated on a hill on the slopes of Mount Etna, this village was made famous in “Nedda”, the first novel from Sicilian writer Giovanni Verga. However, this village is also known for its vineyards and especially for its gastronomic traditions.
Upon your arrival, you will proceed to the typical 18th century Sicilian home of gastronomic journalist Eleonora Consoli, la “Cucina del Sole”. Author of several books on Italian and Sicilian cooking and recipient of numerous awards, she established this cooking school, where her daughter, Monica, is now continuing the family tradition and hosting guests.
Join Monica in the kitchen, where you will enjoy learning how to make dishes that are inspired by old Sicilian recipes making use of vegetables, citrus fruits, and different aromas. You will participate in preparing your own meal and have the pleasure of eating it fresh on the terrace (weather permitting).
After lunch, re-board your coach for the 1-hour return drive to the pier.

Taormina & Greek Theatre
From the pier, you will be transferred by coach to the ancient Greek town of Taormina, a 30-minute drive.
Called Tauromenium in ancient times, Taormina clings to the side of Mount Tauro and offers superb views, splashed with the vibrant colours of bougainvillea and oleanders, of the Mediterranean Sea, Isola Bella and a snow-capped Etna in the background.
A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries. It is home to theatres and a gymnasium from the Greek period, an Odeon and baths from Roman times, buildings blending Arab and Norman cultures, traces of Byzantine, and villas belonging to European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
You will start your excursion with a visit on foot to the historic centre. You will cross the famous Corso Umberto to discover numerous monuments from several eras, and admire Porta Catania, the Cathedral, Piazza IX Aprile and Palazzo Corvaja.
You will then arrive at Teatro Antico, a theatre built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and almost completely rebuilt by the Romans who created a gladiatorial arena. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. Due to its size and acoustic quality the theatre is still used to host festivals and concerts. Seated on the stone terraces, the audience can enjoy the concert while admiring a breath-taking panoramic view of the sea, Mount Tauro and Etna.

Ascent of Mount Etna
Leave the landing pier by coach for the drive to Rifugio Sapienza, about 6,000 ft above sea level, on Mount Etna.
Mt. Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano, the slopes soar up to over 9,800 ft and the flanks are covered with scores of cones and craters. From there you will be able to gaze out across the Catania Gulf and view the woods, orchids and vineyards from the vantage point. But, of course, the major attractions are the crater and the remnants of the awe-inspiring streams of lava.
From there and with the assistance of a professional alpine guide, you will continue by cable car to 7,500 ft and then by special 4x4 minibuses to reach the basis of the main crater at about 8,800 ft above sea level. Up there and still accompanied with your guide, you will be able to go nearer to see last lava flows.
- Since this excursion involves walking at high altitude (9,800 ft – 2 900 m), participants should be in excellent physical condition. Bring a sweater or a jacket as it can be very chilly and windy, and wear sturdy walking shoes. A supplement of €10 per person will be applied if less than 10 persons want to realize the tour. This tour is conducted by an English-speaking photographer-guide. This tour is limited to 80 participants.

Noto, Baroque town
Depart by coach from the port through the countryside, passing through villages and almond groves as you make your way to Noto, the second largest town in Syracuse province and the best example of Sicilian Baroque architecture on the island.
You will cross on foot the Public Gardens, where it is possible to admire the busts of the artists who contributed to Noto’s urban culture and style.
Besides the 18th century Cathedral, currently under restoration after damage suffered during 1990 earthquake, other impressive buildings are the Churches of St Domenico and of St Charles (del Colleggio), the “Ducezio” Palace and “Villadorata” Palace.
Noto has been declared a Heritage site by UNESCO, who also provides financial support for the reconstruction of monuments destroyed during 1990 earthquake.
A refreshment will be offered at a local bar and then you will enjoy some free time to browse around before commencing the return drive to Syracuse.
- Restoration works on the monuments of Noto (after damage suffered during the 1990 earthquake) are almost completed but access to church interiors might still be restricted. Archaeological site & Ortygia
Depart the pier by coach and drive to the archaeological area, which you will reach after a short drive.
Visit the Roman Amphitheatre of Augustus, used for fights between gladiators and wild beasts, the Altar of Hieron, constructed in the 2nd century BC to celebrate the “Eleutherian Feast”, the Latomie of Paradise, huge caverns once used as prisons, the Ear of Dionysius, an enormous grotto with extraordinary echo and the Greek Theatre, one of the largest in the Hellenic World, constructed in the 5th century BC and successively enlarged.
Upon completion of the visit, re-board your coach for the short drive to Ortygia, which you will visit on foot. On Ortygia Island discover the Piazza Pancali (the ruins of the Temple of Apollo of the 6th century BC), Corso Matteotti, Archimede’s Place, Piazza Duomo. Visit the Cathedral in Baroque style, erected over the remains of the Doric Temple of Minerva: in the interiors, see the undamaged twelve Doric columns. Then visit the fountain of Arethusa, the nymph praised by Pindar and Virgilio in one of the most touching and fine myths. Several nobility palaces – majority of them originating in the 15th and 16th centuries – will be seen from outside during the walking tour.
Then, return to the port and your ship.

During the transfer your guide will present the Etruscan countryside. In the ancient past, Etruscans lived in this area and their presence is still alive thanks to the remains of the Etruscan Tombs situated in the countryside. These archaeological remains are so important that they have been listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004 as it is a unique and exceptional testimony of the ancient Etruscan Civilization, the only urban civilization of the pre-Roman Age.
This area is not only famous for its historical side but also because its weather conditions contribute to the cultivation of grape wine and agriculture. You will also discover what this area can offer. A tasting in a farmhouse, located in the countryside, will be served. You will then be greeted and lead you to your reserved area where a rich selection of local products will be served such as cheese and homemade products it will be accompanied by a glass of local wine.

A GLIMPSE OF ROMA AND A PIZZA-MAKING WORKSHOP (1 NIGHT)

Day 1 - Roma
Meet at Fiumicino Airport in the Arrival hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the flight selected by PONANT or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).
You will be transferred to the The Regency, Rome, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel 4*.
The hotel is at a short walk from Via Veneto and The Spanish Steps. You may spend the afternoon exploring the neighbourhood on your own - or simply relax at the hotel.

Day 2 – Roma/Civitavecchia
After breakfast, you will leave your hotel and head to the drop-off point for your Colosseum visit, scheduled for 9.15 a.m.
Once you have visited the inside of this world-famous Roman landmark, you will be taken on a guided walking tour to learn more about the Eternal City. Along the Imperial Forum Way, you will outside of the Roman Forum for an explanation of the site. You will also see Trajan’s Market (from the outside) and Trajan’s Column, up to Venice Square where you can admire the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Continue along the central main street, Via del Corso, and (time permitting) see the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola and its famous faux dome, painted by the Jesuit artist Andrea Pozzo as a trompe l’œil to create the illusion of a domed ceiling. Continue towards the Trevi Fountain.
You will then reach the venue for your cooking lesson, in the city centre. During this workshop, you will learn more about the art of pizza-making and enjoy lunch.
At the end of it, you will walk over to the bus pick-up point at one of Rome’s most famous squares, where you will see the Spanish Steps.
You will then be transferred by bus to the pier of Civitavecchia to board your ship (approximately a 1.5-hour journey).

A twist of Amalfi
From the pier, you will meet your guide and board your minibus for a 30-minute drive, losing yourself in the radiant blue of sea and sky of one of the world's most spectacular coasts. Your panoramic journey will lead you to a charming lemon garden located in Conca dei Marini village. Once a small fishing village, this pearl of the Amalfitan coast is impeccably preserved. Here, you will enjoy a guided visit by a local expert with explanations about the significance and history of the lemon, considered as valuable as gold in Amalfi.
Leaving the garden, you will arrive at a nearby restaurant with panoramic views above the sea. Here, you will have the nice experience of preparing the Limoncello together with the Chef before sitting down to a lemon-scented 4 courses lunch.
After lunch you will reboard your minibus and return to Amalfi for a guided visit. This beautiful and historic city, dating to early Roman rule, has preserved its medieval charm in the city center. Stroll the narrow streets of the Piazza del Duomo on your way to the Cathedral of St. Andrew, built in 987 by the Duke of Amalfi Mansone. This Baroque cathedral houses relics of Andrew which seem to contain "manna" with miraculous properties
Finally, you will board a local motorboat and return to Positano where you will walk through the main center to the tender landing pier, back to your ship.

Amalfi & the Emerald Grotto
From the pier, you will board a motor launch to reach the astonishing and colourful Grotta dello Smeraldo (the Emerald grotto) not far from the Amalfi centre. Enjoy the beauty of the Amalfi coast by cruising to the grotto and once there, on board local boats, experience the emotion of such a suggestive natural spot with its shining emerald green shades.
Discovered in 1932, explorers found a unique cave formation stretching 30 metres (100 feet) high by 60 metres (200 feet) wide, hidden along the coastline. The most fascinating aspect of this cave is the underwater entrance 12 metres (30 feet) deep that allows the sunlight to enter the cave, creating a luminescent Emerald Glow.
At the end of the visit, your launch will drive you back to Amalfi to drop you off in the main square where you will visit the impressive Cathedral of the town and spend some time to browse around and taste local specialities like the Limoncello Liquor.

Ravello
From Amalfi harbour, you will reach Ravello by coach after a 40-minute drive following the narrow main road which stretches along the side of rocky cliffs, overlooking the sea. Every twist and turn of the road offer new and breathtaking views on the world famous Sorrentine peninsula. You will see the rocks rising out of the sea like strange mythological creatures and the small boats in sheltered sandy coves that look like brightly coloured toys from up above.
Ravello is a small city of ancient origins which faces a range of hills overlooking the clear blue sea of the gulf of Salerno. The beauties of this area have inspired poets, painters and musicians during its millennia-old history.
On arrival you will be visiting Villa Rufolo where Wagner stayed. The magical beauties of its gardens and the architecture of the cloisters inspired him for “the Garden of Klingsor”. You will also admire the numerous arches and antique towers as well as the Cathedral, outside visit only.
You will finally drive back to Amalfi, where you will enjoy a soft drink or an ice cream at a local bar.

Panorama of the Aeolian Islands
Lipari is the largest and most populated of the Aeolian Islands. Famous since olden times for its obsidian quarries, the town and port are dominated by a citadel, testimony to the archipelago’s strategic importance in the past.
Leaving from the port by coach you will take a tour of the island. Your first stop stop is the Quattrocchi viewpoint, one of the archipelago’s most striking panoramas. Here you can admire the volcanic peaks of Jacopo and Perciato, against a backdrop of Vulcano Island. There are also other good spots to see the island of Salina, the pumice stone quarries and the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow.
The coach then heads to the centre of Lipari where your excursion will continue on foot. Lipari’s historic centre is dominated by a Castle built on the promontory. Its construction dates back to ancient times, with a tower forming part of Greek fortifications of the 4th and 5th centuries BC, medieval towers from the 13th century, and surrounding walls from the Spanish period. Inside there are numerous archaeological remains as well as the Norman Cathedral Saint Bartolomeo (only outside visit) dating from 1084 and which has a Baroque facade. On the sides, you will notice the ruins of a Norman Abbey. You will also visit the Aeolian Archaeological Museum revealing the evolution of the islands in the active volcano system. You can go into the “classic” section where objects from Lipari and the other islands, from prehistoric times to the Greek and Roman periods, are presented.

Lipari Island & Italian cooking
From the pier, begin your tour with a walk through the town of Lipari, main city of the Aeolian Islands. The pastel-coloured houses of this little port contrast with the rugged and typically Mediterranean landscape that can be seen in the rest of the island.
A one-and-fifteen-hour scenic drive will give you the opportunity to discover this volcanic island and enjoy some stunning panoramas, including the Quattrocchi viewpoint, where you will admire the volcanic peaks of Jacopo and Perciato, against a backdrop of Vulcano Island, one of the most iconic island of the Aeolian archipelago.
In a local pizzeria, the owner will show you how to make this world famous national dish and give you the chance to realise your own pizza and personalise it with your favourite ingredients. Finally, you will taste your tailor-made pizza, accompanied with some wine and other Aeolian delicacies.
After the tasting, you will re-embark your coach for the drive back to the pier.

Palermo & Monreale
From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic fifteen-minute drive through the main streets of Palermo passing by the Piazza Ruggero Settimo, Politeama Square, Massimo Opera House, and the Cathedral.
Located on a wide bay beneath the shadow of Mount Pellegrino, Palermo is a jewel in the crown of Sicily. In the 9th century, Palermo was famed for the wealth of its court and its universities. Today, it is an international famed city with modern day treasures and priceless ancient monuments of architecture and art.
Your stop will be made at the Palatine Chapel, the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily located on the ground floor of the Palazzo Reale in Palermo, where you will enjoy a guided visit. The chapel was commissioned by Roger II of Sicily in 1132 to be built upon an older chapel (now the crypt) constructed around 1080. It took eight years to build it and many more to decorate it with mosaics and fine art.
Back on your coach, you will travel to Monreale, where you will visit its Cathedral, the Duomo.
The Cathedral of Monreale is one of the greatest extant examples of Norman architecture in the world. It was begun in 1174 by William II, and in 1182 the church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral. The church is a national monument of Italy and one of the most important attractions of Sicily. You will also visit the Benedictine’s cloister; the courtyard is enclosed by an arcade supported by 216 sets of twin columns, each with a different design and richly decorated capitals.
After some free time for shopping, re-board your coach for the thirty-minute return drive to the pier and your ship.

Cefalù
From the pier, embark your coach and start your panoramic drive through the historical centre of Palermo, before reaching the coastal highway which will bring you to the charming fishing village of Cefalù.
Cefalù is a haven of tranquillity, a refuge and a sanctuary of religious inspiration. A city of facets, levels, and epochs. The name, which translated means "head", probably referring to the shape of the hill and huge rock crowned with an ancient castle, rising above the town, was given to the town by the Greeks. Cefalù's origins are surrounded in mystery.
Legend tells that Roger II, the well-known Norman sovereign of Sicily, in gratitude to God for sparing his life in a violent storm at sea, commissioned the building of a Cathedral at Cefalù, where he landed after the tempest.
Its characteristics, as well as its position, so close to the sea, make it something of a fortress from the outside as much as it is a church on the inside. The Cathedral was begun on a site in which Roman buildings had already existed. However, after unforeseen circumstances, and changes in construction plans, the original building was never finished. The remains of this building project are three roofs which testify to past ages and building techniques. Inside the cathedral, you will see the paintings and gold Byzantine mosaics the Cathedral is known for.
Continue your walking tour with a photo-stop at the medieval wash-house and the Osterio Magno. Per the tradition, it was built by Roger II as his mansion, but it probably dates from the 14th century. Traces of the medieval tower and decoration can be seen. Excavations held in the interior have showed the presence of ancient edifices and ceramics.
Before returning to the ship, a refreshment will be served and you will have some free time to explore Cefalù on your own and browse the quaint boutiques.

Mount Etna & winery visit and tasting
From the pier, you will board you coach for a drive up the winding roads that work their way along the slopes of Mt. Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe.
Your tour begins with a drive through the small town of Naxos, which was found by Greek colonisers in the 8th century B.C., and then pass the town of Giarre and the villages of Santa Venerina and Zafferana en route. Your destination on Mt. Etna is the Crateri Silvestri area, which features a collection of inactive craters that originated during the massive eruption of 1892. From here, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Gulf of Catania and vineyards.
After taking time to appreciate the power of this site, continue to the Benanti Winery, Monte Serra Estate, where you will join vintners for a visit of the vineyards and the historic oak barrel room.
After the visit, you will enjoy a typical Sicilian lunch and sample several of the winery’s finest vintages. It's a delightful experience that will leave you with an even greater understanding and appreciation of Sicilian flavours.

Sicilian cooking class with Mrs Consoli
From the ship, you will reach the pier by tender. From here, you will board your coach for a 45-minute drive through the small town of Naxos, founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century B.C., and then drive to Catania by motorway.
Once in Catania you will walk to the centre, where the most ancient and typical markets await you. With the assistance of a local expert, you will discover local products like vegetables, fruits, and fishes, used in Mediterranean cuisine. Enjoy the wealth of colours and the Sicilian folklore.
You will then reboard your coach and drive to Viagrande. Situated on a hill on the slopes of Mount Etna, this village was made famous in “Nedda”, the first novel from Sicilian writer Giovanni Verga. However, this village is also known for its vineyards and especially for its gastronomic traditions.
Upon your arrival, you will proceed to the typical 18th century Sicilian home of gastronomic journalist Eleonora Consoli, la “Cucina del Sole”. Author of several books on Italian and Sicilian cooking and recipient of numerous awards, she established this cooking school, where her daughter, Monica, is now continuing the family tradition and hosting guests.
Join Monica in the kitchen, where you will enjoy learning how to make dishes that are inspired by old Sicilian recipes making use of vegetables, citrus fruits, and different aromas. You will participate in preparing your own meal and have the pleasure of eating it fresh on the terrace (weather permitting).
After lunch, re-board your coach for the 1-hour return drive to the pier.
- This tour involves few walking distance on mainly flat floor with some steps at the house. We recommend you wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You will have the opportunity to buy food for your own use at the market but please note that credit cards are not accepted. Taormina & Greek Theatre
From the pier, you will be transferred by coach to the ancient Greek town of Taormina, a 30-minute drive.
Called Tauromenium in ancient times, Taormina clings to the side of Mount Tauro and offers superb views, splashed with the vibrant colours of bougainvillea and oleanders, of the Mediterranean Sea, Isola Bella and a snow-capped Etna in the background.
A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries. It is home to theatres and a gymnasium from the Greek period, an Odeon and baths from Roman times, buildings blending Arab and Norman cultures, traces of Byzantine, and villas belonging to European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
You will start your excursion with a visit on foot to the historic centre. You will cross the famous Corso Umberto to discover numerous monuments from several eras, and admire Porta Catania, the Cathedral, Piazza IX Aprile and Palazzo Corvaja.
You will then arrive at Teatro Antico, a theatre built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and almost completely rebuilt by the Romans who created a gladiatorial arena. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. Due to its size and acoustic quality the theatre is still used to host festivals and concerts. Seated on the stone terraces, the audience can enjoy the concert while admiring a breath-taking panoramic view of the sea, Mount Tauro and Etna.
- As this excursion involves a walk of around 1.5 miles (2 km) on rough terrain with several stairways, we advise you wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Appropriate clothing is required when visiting religious monuments, with knees and shoulders covered.

Ascent of Mount Etna
Leave the landing pier by coach for the drive to Rifugio Sapienza, about 6,000 ft above sea level, on Mount Etna.
Mt. Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano, the slopes soar up to over 9,800 ft and the flanks are covered with scores of cones and craters. From there you will be able to gaze out across the Catania Gulf and view the woods, orchids and vineyards from the vantage point. But, of course, the major attractions are the crater and the remnants of the awe-inspiring streams of lava.
From there and with the assistance of a professional alpine guide, you will continue by cable car to 7,500 ft and then by special 4x4 minibuses to reach the basis of the main crater at about 8,800 ft above sea level. Up there and still accompanied with your guide, you will be able to go nearer to see last lava flows.
- Since this excursion involves walking at high altitude (9,800 ft – 2 900 m), participants should be in excellent physical condition. Bring a sweater or a jacket as it can be very chilly and windy, and wear sturdy walking shoes. A supplement of €10 per person will be applied if less than 10 persons want to realize the tour. This tour is conducted by an English-speaking photographer-guide. This tour is limited to 80 participants.

Noto, Baroque town
Depart by coach from the port through the countryside, passing through villages and almond groves as you make your way to Noto, the second largest town in Syracuse province and the best example of Sicilian Baroque architecture on the island.
You will cross on foot the Public Gardens, where it is possible to admire the busts of the artists who contributed to Noto’s urban culture and style.
Besides the 18th century Cathedral, currently under restoration after damage suffered during 1990 earthquake, other impressive buildings are the Churches of St Domenico and of St Charles (del Colleggio), the “Ducezio” Palace and “Villadorata” Palace.
Noto has been declared a Heritage site by UNESCO, who also provides financial support for the reconstruction of monuments destroyed during 1990 earthquake.
A refreshment will be offered at a local bar and then you will enjoy some free time to browse around before commencing the return drive to Syracuse.
- Restoration works on the monuments of Noto (after damage suffered during the 1990 earthquake) are almost completed but access to church interiors might still be restricted. This excursion involves approximately 1.2 mile (2 km) of walking mostly over easy terrain, except for steps to enter churches. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes. Appropriate dress is recommended to enter religious sites (shoulders and knees must be covered). The palace visits are only outside visits. This tour is not recommended for guest with limited mobility.

Archaeological site & Ortygia
Depart the pier by coach and drive to the archaeological area, which you will reach after a short drive.
Visit the Roman Amphitheatre of Augustus, used for fights between gladiators and wild beasts, the Altar of Hieron, constructed in the 2nd century BC to celebrate the “Eleutherian Feast”, the Latomie of Paradise, huge caverns once used as prisons, the Ear of Dionysius, an enormous grotto with extraordinary echo and the Greek Theatre, one of the largest in the Hellenic World, constructed in the 5th century BC and successively enlarged.
Upon completion of the visit, re-board your coach for the short drive to Ortygia, which you will visit on foot. On Ortygia Island discover the Piazza Pancali (the ruins of the Temple of Apollo of the 6th century BC), Corso Matteotti, Archimede’s Place, Piazza Duomo. Visit the Cathedral in Baroque style, erected over the remains of the Doric Temple of Minerva: in the interiors, see the undamaged twelve Doric columns. Then visit the fountain of Arethusa, the nymph praised by Pindar and Virgilio in one of the most touching and fine myths. Several nobility palaces – majority of them originating in the 15th and 16th centuries – will be seen from outside during the walking tour.
Then, return to the port and your ship.

Continue with the visit of Palazzo Parisio, a unique 19th century palace in the heart of the Mediterranean. Palazzo Parisio is not only another palace of the legendary Knights of St. John, but the ultimate memorial of ambitions, aspirations and pretensions of a 19th century noble family. It houses two baroque walled gardens, including a lovely orangery – a miniature Versailles.
