PONANT invites you on an unforgettable circuit that will take you from the Adriatic Sea to the Aegean Sea, discovering the unmissable sites of Italy, Greece and the Dalmatian coastlines. Enjoy this 8-day cruise aboard Le Lyrial, between Venice and Athens.
Following a first port of call in the picturesque port of Hvar, you will continue to sail along the Dalmatian coastlines to Dubrovnik. Sitting high on a rocky outcrop, its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, watches the world go by.
You will then reach Montenegro after sailing in the Bay of Kotor, which is strangely reminiscent of Norwegian fjords. The city of Kotor nestles in a bay surrounded by wooded mountains. Its old town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its medieval architecture.
From Brindisi, do not miss out on the visit to Lecce, justifiably nicknamed “the Florence of Southern Italy.” This city, a major site for Baroque architecture, is home to many architectural wonders.
You will then head to the Delphi sanctuary of Greek gods which you will reach via Itea. Delphi is located on a grandiose site that is one of Greece’s most beautiful natural landscapes. You will walk in the footsteps of the pilgrims of old, who came here to consult the famous oracle.
Your cruise will end in Athens, the mythical city dominated by the Acropolis.

16 July 2021 Venice
Embarkation 16/7/2021 from 16h00 to 17h00
Departure 16/7/2021 at 18h00
Proud and eternal, Venice has reigned on its lagoon ever since the 6th century. You may think you know this city before even setting foot here. You will inevitably fall in love with the charm of the innumerable treasures of the Serenissima: Saint Mark’s square, the basilica, Doges palace, the Grand Canal and the gondolas. Yet, secret Venice is also waiting for you to explore its little interlacing streets and canals, to ramble through its squares and to push open the doors of its churches. The city’s extraordinary heritage shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a glass of Spritz and a few tramezzini.
17 July 2021 Hvar
Arrival 17/7/2021 early afternoon
Departure 17/7/2021 evening
Off the coast of Split, Hvar will surprise you by its traditions that haven’t changed since Antiquity. The country’s oldest town, Stari Grad, is here on this Dalmatian Island. The town nestles by a cove on the north-west coast, surrounded by dry stone wall structures on the Stari Grad plains. These have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because they were built in the time of the Ancient Greeks. From these parcels of land come wines and olive oil manufactured manually. In the upper part of town, it is possible to discover hams and cheeses made by local producers.
18 July 2021 Dubrovnik
Arrival 18/7/2021 early morning
Departure 18/7/2021 late evening
Emblem of the Dalmatian coast, Dubrovnik is magnificently positioned on a rocky spur. History is sovereign here, in this ancient city, now a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. You will perhaps be surprised by the proportions of La Placa, the central drag through the city. The sheer width of it can be explained by the fact that it straddles a former lagoon. The elegant houses along La Placa are built in the legendary travertine stone. At Pile gate, you will be greeted by the statue of the patron saint of Dubrovnik, and you can admire the coastline as you walk along the ramparts. But what’s inside Fort Saint John, adjoining the outer walls? A maritime museum and an aquarium featuring rare fish from the Adriatic.
19 July 2021 Kotor
Arrival 19/7/2021 early morning
Departure 19/7/2021 late afternoon
Situated in one of Montenegro’s most beautiful bays, the medieval city of Kotor is a small town full of charm, truly imbued with the traditions and stories of another time. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, this village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has preserved many historical monuments from this epoch. During your stop, be sure to admire the impressive castle that dominates the town, and let yourself fall under the charm of its maze of small streets and intimate squares on which folk festivals featuring magnificent colourful costumes are often organised.
20 July 2021 Brindisi
Arrival 20/7/2021 early morning
Departure 20/7/2021 early evening
Located on the “heel” of the Italian boot, Brindisi has been famous since Antiquity for its huge natural harbour, which is amongst the most sheltered in the Adriatic. The position of the city, turned towards the Orient, explains the commercial trade and the bonds established from the outset with Greece and other eastern Mediterranean countries. Brindisi is an ideal starting point for visiting the villages of the Puglia region, such as Alberobello and its famous trulli, the traditional dry stone dwellings with conical roofs, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or Ostuni with its immaculate façades dominated by a majestic cathedral. The masseria, fortified farmhouses typical of the region, punctuate an ancient landscape of olive groves, vineyards and orchards.
21 July 2021 Fiskardo, Cephalonia
Arrival 21/7/2021 midday
Departure 21/7/2021 evening
We know you’ll be won over by the charm of this fishing village located north-east of the island of Cephalonia. A best kept secret of the Ionian archipelago, Fiskardo gives onto the coasts of Ithaca, home of legendary king Odysseus. To see the coasts, just walk out onto the jetty. While you’re there, look back at the colourful houses along the quaysides: they have surprising architecture with evidence of Italian influence. Unwind at the café terraces along the water’s edge, in the shade of gazebos. While you watch the boats in the harbour, you can savour some local specialities like kreatopita, small meat pastries.
22 July 2021 Itea
Arrival 22/7/2021 early morning
Departure 22/7/2021 midday
Tucked away in the Gulf of Corinth, this little port is situated in continental Greece, north-west of Athens. Take an easy stroll along the old cobblestone quays, while gazing at the summits encircling the Bay of Itea. We wouldn’t be surprised if you are tempted by a visit to the Delphi Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located on a plateau on the slope of Mount Parnassus, just ten kilometres from Itea. A listed UNESCO World Heritage site, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience whose ancient ruins are surrounded by steep mountains.
22 July 2021 Crossing the Corinth Canal
Arrival 22/7/2021
Departure 22/7/2021
The Corinth Canal cuts through the Isthmus of Corinth, turning the Peloponnese into an island as it separates the region from the Greek mainland. Inaugurated in 1893, the canal is a little over six kilometres long and enables merchant vessels and passenger to avoid a long 400-km detour around the peninsula. The two sides of the canal reach a height of approximately fifty metres. From the exterior decks, don’t miss this unique opportunity to watch the ship as it navigates along the narrow strip of water encased between tall, ochre cliffs. What an experience!
23 July 2021 Athens
Arrival 23/7/2021 early morning
Disembarkation 23/7/2021 at 07h00
The Greek capital city is located on the edge of the Saronic gulf, in the east of the country. It bears a plural name in reference to the first villages that surround the Acropolis. You will be enchanted by the rocky plateau presided by its monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage. In the city below, you can visit some of the liveliest districts in Athens: Plaka, with its maze of colourful streets, and where, in the evenings the drifting aroma of moussaka and garlic prawns will tickle your taste buds. The National Archaeological museum and the Cycladic Art Museum are also some of the city’s key attractions and allow visitors to discover Athens’ cultural past.
This small and charming town is located around a natural port and it’s undoubtedly one of the most famous seaside resorts of Dalmatian coast.
A lot of splendid monuments as the Cathedral, the ancient Arsenal and different palaces are bearing witness to a rich history of gothic and renaissance arts.
From the pier, follow your guide through narrow tiny streets to the 15th century Franciscan Monastery. The cloister with its rounded arches and a well in the middle dominates the Renaissance monastery. The former spacious refectory and a small, adjacent room have been turned into the monastery museum. Along with a collection of old books and coins, the famous "Last Supper", a work belonging to the Venetian School of Palma the Younger from the end of the 16th century, has the strongest claims on the attention of the numerous visitors.
After crossing the main square, you will pass by the Cathedral of St Stephan (outside visit). It was built in stages during the 16th and 17th centuries, while the interior was not wholly completed until the 18th century. From outside, it has the characteristics of the Renaissance style and inside the baroque style.
Then, you will visit the Benedictine Monastery, which holds a rich collection of lace made of agave leaves.
After this walking tour you may follow your guide back to the pier or stay in town for some time at leisure.

It is by an original way of transportation, kayak, that you will discover Dubrovnik’s charms. You will go along the city walls and navigate among caves and islands.
From the pier, meet your guide and stroll through the main street of Dubrovnik toward Pile Gate to the kayak centre.
After listening to the safety instructions, you will board your kayak and start your adventure.
You will row between the fortresses of Bokar and Lovrijenac.
The Bokar fortress is listed among Dubrovnik’s medieval fortresses and overlooks the south-west part of the old town. This circular fortress, dating from the 15th century, was built over a period of more than one century. This important monument, overshooting the medieval walls, was a key element in Dubrovnik’s defence system, including Pile Gate and City Bridge. In addition to its defensive role, it also served as a prison during the 19th century. Fort Bokar is one of the oldest castles of its kind in the world.
Built upon a 37-metre-high sheer rock overlooking the sea, fortress Lovrijenac is one of the most impressive locations in Dubrovnik. This detached fortress was of prime importance for the defence of the western part of Dubrovnik, both against attacks from land and the sea. Chronologists date the fort to 1018 or 1038. However, first records of the fort’s existence are from 1301 when the council elected the Commander of the Fort. According to legend, in the 11th century Venice planned to send its troops to this rock in front of Dubrovnik and build a fortress in order to conquer the city. However, Dubrovnik learned about this plan and the citizens were mobilised to erect a fortress at the very same spot before the Venetians arrive. While all the other fortresses are part of the city wall system, this one stands high on its own rock, a position which earned it the title ‘the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik’.
Leaving the forts behind, you will steer a course round the city walls to Lokrum. According to legend, Richard the Lionheart was cast ashore here after being shipwrecked in 1192 when he came back of his 3rd crusade. You will make a stop at the island, enjoy some refreshments and have time at leisure to discover the island or have a swim.

From the pier, meet your guide and start your stroll through the streets of this medieval town.
Along the way you will visit, among other places, the Franciscan Monastery whose cloister ranks among the most inspiring sites of the city. The Monastery houses also the oldest still working pharmacy in Europe and the third oldest pharmacy in the world founded in 1317. It is still active and still offers creams manufactured according to ancestral recipes.
After visiting the monastery, you will go to the Assumption Cathedral built in the 18th century on the ruins of a church dating from the 12th century destroyed by an earthquake in 1667. This one might surprise you by its simplicity and the clarity of its interior, but its treasure is among the richest in Europe, with a unique collection of relics in gold and silver.
You will continue with the Dominican Monastery, soberer than the previous one, and its museum with a fine collection of Renaissance paintings, including the triptych of N. Bozidarvic representing Dubrovnik before the earthquake or the table of Sainte Madeleine and Saint Blaise, the work of Titian.
Other fine buildings will be viewed from the outside, like the Sponza Palace notable for its columned courtyard with elaborate stone carvings, Church of Saint Blaise, Onofriou’s Fountain, etc.
Then, you will go to the Dubrovnik cable car. A short ride will take you up to the top of Srd hill from where you can admire Dubrovnik Old town, Elaphite Islands and Lokrum.

From the pier, board your coach for a 1-hour scenic drive along the Adriatic Road toward the town of Ston.
Ston was built according to the plans approved by the Dubrovnik government in 1335 and amended in 1370 and is considered one of the best planned and best structured cities in Europe. The walls of Ston were a massive architecture and construction feat. Originally 7,000-metre long (22,965 ft.), they consist of several parts; the Ston city walls, the Mali Ston city walls and the Big wall with its three forts. Its forts and towers are strengthened by 10 round and 31 square flanking towers, as well as 6 semi-circular bastions. It took almost four centuries to finish these complex defence walls, as the builders had to adapt to the rough terrain and advancements in warfare technology. The walls were last used for defence in the 19th century, and today they are a priceless monument of immense architectural and cultural value.
Once arriving at Ston’s walls, you will start your hiking passing distance of almost 4 kilometres over demanding terrain with more than 400 steps before reaching Mali Ston, the “oysters capital” of Croatia.
Upon arrival in Mali Ston, you will board a local boat which will take you to oyster and mussel beds. Your host will welcome you on board and introduce you with oyster & mussel farming in this area. You will have the opportunity to learn about the oyster & mussel production as well as to taste freshly prepared oysters & mussels including mussel buzara (mussels cooked with wine, garlic and olive oil).
Finally, re-board your coach for a 1-hour return ride back to Dubrovnik along the old historical road passing through the old villages of Dubrovacko Primorje.

From the pier, embark your coach for the 25-minute drive to Perast, town with almost the same number of churches as the number of inhabitants.
Once arriving, you will enjoy the scenery and architecture of this old historical town. Between the 13th and 18th centuries Perast belonged to Venice. The most beautiful buildings were constructed under the period of the Republic of Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries when Perast was at its peak. The Parish Church in Perast was built in 1740 by the Venetian architect, Giuseppe Beati but only the church tower and the church vault remain. You will visit the St. Nicholas Church, patron saint of the sailors.
There are two small islands in the close vicinity of Perast: St. George Island and Our Lady of the Rock Island.
You will reach the man-made islet of Our Lady of the Rocks after a 15-minute boat ride. The stone plateau in the middle of the sea with a church on it is the result of the enduring efforts of generations of mariners “to leave there, in the very heart of the Bay of Boka Kotorska, a testimony of their Christian faith and culture…”. The island was built artificially by scuttling old ships and depositing stones around a small crag. The construction of a sanctuary began in the first century of the Venetian rule. The sanctuary was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin because this cult was greatly venerated by the Venetians. On the altar is the famous icon of Our Lady of the Rock, a 15th century work by Lovro Marinov Dobricevic. It is the most valuable work of art in the church because its history is so closely related to that of the island, the only artificially built island in the Adriatic. The church itself is decorated with more than 2,500 votive tablets made of silver, mostly donated by seamen.
Finally, you will get back to Kotor, following your guide on a walking tour of the city.

Your guided walking tour starts at Terrazzino Belvedere located in Aia Piccola, a wide space used in the past to thresh the corn. Then, you will see Casa D’Amore (outside view only). This building was included into the list of the World Heritage Sites and was the first house built in Alberobello with mortar and without the classical cone shape, in 1797.
The visit continues with the tour of the old city centre called Rione Monti. This quarter is composed with 1,030 trulli, most of them are still lived. Then, you will visit the Church of Saint Anthony. The façade of this trullo shaped church is composed of three wings adorned with a rose window and two round windows, as well a bell tower surmounted by a small dome. Its roof in form of cone measures 20 metres high.
You will enjoy some free time to discover the narrow streets of Alberobello with its workshops, and see the artisans working.
Finally, you will go to a picturesque Masseria to taste specialties like Apulian focaccia along with some local wine.

From the pier, you will board your coach for a 20-minute drive to the Church of Santa Maria del Casale, a splendid Romanesque-Gothic construction from the 13th century.
Listed among the most important National Monuments since 1875, it has an elegant façade of both honey-coloured and white local stones. Inside, a series of fine Byzantine-style frescos (among them “The Last Judgement” and “The Tree of the Cross” with twelve branches symbolising the Apostles). In March 1310, the Templar Knights went under trial by the Pope Clemente V. The order was condemned, and therefore abolished and all the knights condemned to death. The adjoining cloister seems to be the place where the execution took place.
After the visit, you will rejoin your coach and go back to the town centre to discover several other mysterious places and symbols.
A short walk along Corso Garibaldi will introduce you to the modern Brindisi with its shops and beautiful palaces. Then, you will leave Piazza Vittoria behind you and discover the ancient Roman District.
Indeed, under the area of the New Teatro Verdi, remains of the ancient Roman Brindisium were discovered in the 1960s, and the Palazzo Granafei Nervegna houses a treasure: the capital of one of the two Roman Columns known as the final point of the Appian Way. For many years the columns were the most important reference to sailors entering the port of Brindisi.
Walking through the very ancient heart of Brindisi, you will admire the Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro: a circular construction built at the end of the 11th century. Every single stone of the Temple is a symbol of ancient history and culture: mythological scenes, animals, flowers and plants make it a special place full of mystery and intrigue. It is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in all Southern Italy; the interior is the copy of the structure of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, with the shape of a “horse shoe” with eight columns in a concentric circle.
You will then reach the Cathedral and the place where copies of the Roman Columns are located.
At the end of this visit, your guide will lead you to the main streets of the city centre. Here you may decide whether remaining in town and wander at leisure, or going back to the ship with your guide.

From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour drive to Lecce where your walking tour of the old town will start. You will walk through the centre of the town with your guide to discover a remarkable architectural style known as the “Barocco Leccese”. From the 16th to the 18th century, Lecce knew a period of great splendour during which it was embellished with Rococo’ and Baroque Monuments.
The city of Lecce has earned itself various epithets thanks to its beauty and its historical and architectural treasures: in fact, it is usually referred to as “the Florence of Southern Italy” or “open-air museum” for the abundance of churches and noble palaces, made more elegant and refined by the unique and sumptuous decorations realised with the “leccese stone”, a particular stone whose colour gets the same nuance as honey under the rays of the sun.
Set in the very heart of the Salento region, called “the Heel of Italy’s boot”, Lecce dates back to Roman times: today you can still admire in Piazza St. Oronzo the Roman Amphitheatre (from outside) which dates back to the second century and could hold up to 20,000 spectators. In this arena gladiators used to face and fight against wild animals.
During the tour you will visit Santa Croce Basilica (only outside visit), which is sumptuously decorated, without being overbearing: close to it you will admire the impressive façade of the Governor’s Palace (the former monastery of the Celestine monks). Your tour cannot end without a visit of what is considered one of the finest squares in Southern Italy: Piazza Duomo. Time permitting, you will enjoy some time at leisure for shopping before returning to Brindisi and your ship.

From the pier, board your coach for a 30-minute picturesque drive through olive groves before reaching the Archaeological Site.
Once arriving, you will take the Sacred Way that was followed by ancient pilgrims and visitors to the site. The path begins at the southeast corner of the site and winds its way up the hillside, past ancient treasuries and monuments, to the temple of Apollo.
It is an imposing temple of the Doric order whose existence was woven through the turbulent history of the site and endured numerous incarnations. The remains that you can see date back to the 4th century B.C. The Temple of Apollo was first built around the 7th century B.C. by the two legendary architects Trophonios and Agamedes. The exterior was decorated with shields captured from the Persians at Plataea. This temple was also of the Doric order and had 6 columns at the front, and 15 columns at the flanks. Today, you can see one complete column of the facade and portions of five more columns. Also visible are the foundations of the outer colonnade and the interior sekos.
You will continue your walk and pass the spare ruins of the Senate of Delphi, followed be a pile of rocks, marking the site of the early Delphi Oracle which according to legend was guarded by the snake Python. For those who wish, the Theatre can be visited.
A few steps from the sanctuary of Apollo, the Delphi museum has exhibited for over a century, the objects found at the archaeological site. He is one of the four largest museums in Greece, with Athens and Olympia. Vases, bronzes, sculptures found in temples, offerings made to Apollo by the pilgrims, objects of gold and ivory found under the slabs of the Sacred Way can be admired in this museum.
At the end of your visit, you will join your coach and enjoy magnificent views over the Bay of Itea before reaching the charming town of Delphi.
Once arriving, you will enjoy free time to browse the shops before your return on Itea.

From the pier, embark your coach for the one-hour drive to the Saint Lucas Monastery. On the way, you will pass by Delphi and Arachova villages.
The historic walled monastery is one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art and is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in Greece. It was founded in the early 10th century by the hermit Saint Lucas, whose relics are kept in the monastery. The main shrine is the tomb of Saint Lucas, originally situated in the vault, but later placed at the juncture of the two churches, the church of Theotokos and the Catholic Church which is the oldest in the complex.
Continue your journey with the visit of Arachova village. Arachova is a mountain small village and its quaint houses are built up on the north slopes of Mount Parnassos, with 3300 inhabitants, at 800 – 1,100m altitude. In 2000 B.C. Homer mentioned in the Iliad two famous generals who took part in the Trojan War Epistrophos and Schedias from the old towns of Anemoria and Kiparissos. These towns were situated around where Arachova stands today. Later, in about 334 B.C. Philip the Second King of Macedonia destroyed both towns and their populations dispersed over the hills until a new town, Arachova, was built. Today the 'jewel' of Parnassos Arachova remains vital because it keeps its traditions alive and the residents remain simple and hospitable. From the first moment, you will feel a different wind blowing up here, and understand why the locals work so hard to upkeep the areas natural beauty. This town is famous for its carpets and blankets woven by hand and for its wines and cheeses.
After a short walking tour and time to browse through the narrow streets with the numerous souvenir and local product shops, you will return to the ship.

From Venice, take a trip through Veneto to discover prestigious cities with a rich heritage. Immerse yourself in the distinctive atmosphere of Verona, where love, music, passion and tragedy intermingle. Wander through the city’s picturesque streets, following in the footsteps of Shakespeare and Maria Callas. Soak up the gentleness of the surrounding countryside and discover the Renaissance heritage of the architect Palladio in Vicenza.
This pre-cruise package combines culture and romanticism.
Day 1–Venice/Verona
Meet and greet at Venice airport arrival hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the PONANT selected flight.
You will leave Venice and head for Verona. After about 1 ½ hours on the road, you will make a first stop at Luvigliano di Torreglia. You will arrive in the enchanting setting provided by the Euganean Hills (Colli Euganei). In perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape, the extraordinary residence of the archbishops of Padua (Villa dei Vescovi) stands magnificent and fascinating on a terrace at the top of a hill.
You will visit this magnificent villa built on the ruins of the Torreglia medieval castle between 1535 and 1542 by the episcopal curia of Padua, based on Giovanni Maria Falconetto’s plans to build a summer residence for the Archbishop of Padua. The construction, which was resumed in 1567 under the supervision of Andrea della Valle, was completed some ten years later. The massive structure of the villa stands at the heart of splendid gardens. The surrounding landscape is very typical: shaped by a succession of reliefs of varying heights and shapes, it offers a welcoming panorama. Inside, floral and mythological frescoes attributed to the Flemish painter Lambert Sustris (mid-16th century) can be found.
You will have lunch at a local restaurant with the gentle curves of the Euganean Hills as a backdrop, located in an Italian vineyard from the Venetia region boasting a DOC appellation since 1969.
You will continue to Verona, where you will arrive in the late afternoon.
You will be taken to your 5-star hotel, The Due Torri, located in the heart of the city.
Check-in.
The rest of the day and dinner are at leisure.
Day 2–Verona
This day will be spent discovering Verona.
Often considered the most beautiful city in Northern Italy after Venice, Verona is also called “la piccola Roma” (the little Rome). Indeed, the first noteworthy landmark upon arriving in the city is the Arena, one of the biggest amphitheatres of the Roman world and one of the best preserved.
You will take a guided tour of the Arena, built in 30 AD under the reign of Emperor Augustus outside the walls of the ancient Roman city. This elliptical amphitheatre is 152 metres (500 ft) long and 128 metres (420 ft) wide. Its outside walls reach a height of 32 metres (105 ft). It is undoubtedly the most well-preserved in Italy and could accommodate 30,000 spectators there to watch circus games, gladiatorial combats and other popular entertainment.
Because the amphitheatre has excellent acoustics, in 1913, to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi, the tenor Giovanni Zenatello and the producer Ottone Rovato decided to create an opera festival that was inaugurated with a performance of Aida.
To the sound of an aria from Norma… You will set off to discover the city in the footsteps of the famous opera singer Maria Callas. It was in Verona that, during an audition, Giovanni Zenatello (the Arena creative director) became enthralled by the young woman’s talent, and in June 1947 Maria Callas left the port of New York to make her debut at one of European most prestigious festivals. You will go past the Pensione Accademia (where she sojourned), the Pedavena restaurant, the house where she lived, and the church where she got married.
You will have lunch at a local restaurant in the city centre.
To round off your visit of the city, you will discover Shakespeare in the streets of Verona through the story of the star-crossed lovers, Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague. The two heroes, the children of two feuding families, married in secret. To avoid a forced marriage, in the absence of Romeo, Juliet drank a potion to fall into a very deep sleep. Believing her dead, Romeo poisoned himself. When Juliet woke up, she was so heartbroken that she took her own life… The most performed play of the English playwright was born in Verona. In the company of your guide, you will follow in their footsteps.
The rest of your day will be free time to stroll around at your leisure, and perhaps treat yourself to some of the local specialities along the banks of the Adige.
Day 3–Verona/Vicenza/Venice
You will leave the hotel in the late morning, for a one-hour drive to Vicenza.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and surrounded by the Berici Hills, Vicenza is utterly charming with beautiful architecture. Considered a pearl of the Renaissance, it is known for being the city of Andrea Palladio. This brilliant 16 th-century architect is behind the city’s most famous buildings and sites.
To discover this exceptional architectural heritage, you will stroll through the very lively historic centre that is brimming with works of art.
Along the Corso Palladio, the city’s high street, you will find fashion and art shops. But more importantly, you can admire a succession of superb patrician houses, such as Palazzo Valmarana and Palazzo Chiericati, built by Palladio in 1550 and now housing the Museo Civico.
The most remarkable landmark in the city is the Teatro Olimpico, Palladio last creation. It is the oldest enclosed theatre in Europe. Its light structure, composed mainly of wood and stucco, is painted in trompe l’oeil imitating marble. The theatre is arranged like those of ancient times, with seating tiers.
Not far from it stands the Church of Santa Corona. This huge Gothic church was erected in 1261 to house a thorn from Jesus Christ’s crown. Inside, important paintings by Bellini and Veronese can be admired.
A pleasant wander through the city centre will lead you to Piazza dei Signori, lined with 15 th-century buildings and overlooked by the imposing Palazzo della Ragione, often called “the Basilica”, easily identifiable by its green roof. It was originally a Gothic-style building that served as the seat of government.
After lunch in a typical restaurant, you will leave the centre of Verona and head for the Basilica of Monte Berico. It sits on a hill planted with cypress tree in the south of the city, a holiday destination for the rich Vicenzian lords. The Baroque-style basilica was built in the 15 th century. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is said to have appeared several times in this spot during the plague outbreaks that took place from 1426 to 1428.
Right near there, you will admire the Villa La Rotonda, a jewel of Palladian architecture built between 1550 and 1552. Its regular and symmetrical shape is reminiscent of an antique temple with a square layout and a dome.
At the end of your visit you will head to Venice (approximately a one-hour trip) to board your ship.

After crossing the main square, you will pass by the Cathedral of St Stephan (outside visit).

From the pier, you will board your coach to the village of Alberobello, 1h30 of driving. The small village of Alberobello is famous all over the world for its traditional conical houses with whitewashed walls and stone roofs, built without mortar, called “trulli”. Alberobello was declared in 1996 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Vases, bronzes, sculptures found in
