Set sail to discover the cultural and artistic jewels of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas with PONANT. During this 9-day cruise, Le Bougainville will take you to Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy.
Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, to choose from a selection offered by PONANT. During this cruise, admire the heritage treasures of Split, discover the medieval vestiges of Dubrovnik, or set off from Taormina to climb the mythical Mount Etna. The diversity of experiences on offer promises you intense and varied moments (to discover the full range of excursions, go to the itinerary tab).
Your journey will begin in Venice where, before your cruise, you will have the opportunity to discover or rediscover the stunning “Floating City” and its many canals, its vaporetti and its mythical gondolas before sailing to Rab. The smallest island in the Kvarner archipelago, its charm lies in its pristine forests and wild coves, but also in its powerful medieval past, evidenced by its military fortifications built in the 4th century BCE.
To the north of Dalmatia, the charming fishing village of Primosten unfolds before you, with its pretty traditional stone houses and its architectural heritage influenced by the Venetian Republic. It is the gateway to the magnificent Krka Waterfalls and you will fall in love with its authenticity and exceptional environment.
Split will open its doors to you to discover its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with treasures such as Diocletian's Palace or the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. Facing it is Hvar, the best known and most attractive island in the Adriatic. In Stari Grad, echoes of the past abound. Founded by the Greeks 2,400 years ago, its plain is now listed with UNESCO for having retained its original agricultural landscape of vineyards and olive groves. Then the national park of the island of Mljet, surrounded by a wildly beautiful coastline, will be the occasion for a timeless interlude in the shade of the green oaks and Aleppo pines, between lush vegetation and saltwater lakes.
You will sail along the coast to reach the mythical city of Dubrovnik. In the aptly named “Pearl of the Adriatic”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will be inspired by its millennia-old history, fascinated by its limestone cliffs sculpted by the wind and marvel at the heritage of its old town.
Experience a unique moment in Montenegro when your ship calls at Tivat, a town facing the mountains of the Bay of Kotor. In this city founded in the 14th century by the Venetians and the Austro-Hungarians, you will discover the authenticity of the old town or admire the magnificent beaches as you wander around.
Next, you will visit the stunning Puglia region in Italy when the ship calls at Otranto. Do not miss a visit to Lecce: Its lavish baroque monuments have earned it the nickname “Florence of the South of Italy”.
You will set sail again, this time to discover Sicily. In Taormina, at the foot of Etna’s everlasting snow, fall under the spell of the picturesque city centre with cobbled streets leading to the city’s impressive ancient theatre boasting exceptional acoustics.
Your cruise will come to an end in Valletta, capital of the island of Malta and former stronghold of the Knights of the Order of Malta.

Proud and eternal, Venice has reigned on its lagoon ever since the 6th century. You may think you know this city before even setting foot here. You will inevitably fall in love with the charm of the innumerable treasures of the Serenissima: Saint Mark’s square, the basilica, Doges palace, the Grand Canal and the gondolas. Yet, secret Venice is also waiting for you to explore its little interlacing streets and canals, to ramble through its squares and to push open the doors of its churches. The city’s extraordinary heritage shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a glass of Spritz and a few tramezzini.
Arrival 6/8/2025 early afternoon
Departure 6/8/2025 evening
We have no doubt that the authenticity of this little island in Kvarner bay will charm you beyond belief. Dating from Adriatic Antiquity, its name means “wooded lands” in reference to the pinewoods, cypresses and cork oaks surrounding the main town. This town is called Rab, like the island. Here, you will see architecture of Venetian influence, inherited from the Middle Ages, illustrated by the bell-tower. Below, the ramparts provide views embracing the entire coastline, punctuated by deserted creeks.
Arrival 7/8/2025 early morning
Departure 7/8/2025 late morning
Located south of Sibenik, Primosten is a picturesque village on the Dalmatian Coast, whose charm is distilled, via its narrow streets, through pretty stone houses and an architectural heritage influenced by the Venetian Republic. Built on a rocky peninsula, the historic city was connected to land by a mobile bridge from which it earned its name in the 16th century: in Croatian, primostiti means “to bridge”. The high point of the village, the Church of St. George watches over the stunning bay enveloped in crystal-clear waters while, to the north of the peninsula, the charming beach of Raduca reveals itself between the skies and the pine forest. Further on, the vines of the renowned babić varietal, protected from erosion by low stone walls, complete this idyllic setting.
Arrival 7/8/2025 early afternoon
Departure 7/8/2025 late evening
On the Dalmatian coast, the town of Split offers cultural visits in a seaside atmosphere. Close to the seafront shaded by palm trees, the historical centre listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a unique building: the Diocletian’s Palace. Here you will explore its galleries, courtyards with carved columns, as well as a former mausoleum converted into a church, namely Saint Domnius Cathedral. If you get peckish, stop off at a terrace in the Pjaca, the main square in the old town, where you can try a palacinka, a kind of pancake topped with melted cheese.
Arrival 8/8/2025 early morning
Departure 8/8/2025 late evening
You will sail towards the popular island of Hvar, for a day in Stari Grad, an intimate port of call that is off the beaten track. Let your feelings guide you and discover this pretty city located at the end of a fertile plain, planted with vines and olive groves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Emblem of the Dalmatian coast, Dubrovnik is magnificently positioned on a rocky spur. History is sovereign here, in this ancient city, now a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. You will perhaps be surprised by the proportions of La Placa, the central drag through the city. The sheer width of it can be explained by the fact that it straddles a former lagoon. The elegant houses along La Placa are built in the legendary travertine stone. At Pile gate, you will be greeted by the statue of the patron saint of Dubrovnik, and you can admire the coastline as you walk along the ramparts. But what’s inside Fort Saint John, adjoining the outer walls? A maritime museum and an aquarium featuring rare fish from the Adriatic.
Arrival 10/8/2025 early morning
Departure 10/8/2025 late afternoon
Much of Tivat’s elegance comes from the beauty of its marina, Porto Montenegro, which attracts many influential personalities. The port’s promenade, emphasised by its line of palm trees facing the mountains of the Bay of Kotor, really is a setting with unique charm. Built in the 14th century, the town was successively governed by the Venetians and the Austro-Hungarians before the creation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia following the First World War. Today, Montenegro's most prosperous city welcomes visitors, in particular to visit its old town or take a walk along its magnificent beaches.
Arrival 11/8/2025 early morning
Departure 11/8/2025 midday
Located in the Apulia region, Otrante is the easternmost transalpine town. Behind its medieval ramparts, you will taste the sweetlife of Salento, the “heel on Italy’s boot”. Inhabited since Antiquity, Otrante has today become a very pleasant seaside town. Yet its history is still visible as you meander through the little streets of its old centre. With its magnificent 12th century ornamental mosaic tiling, the Cathedral is one of its most beautiful treasures. During a stroll along the ramparts, you can sit and relax at a café terrace.
Arrival 12/8/2025 early morning
Departure 12/8/2025 evening
Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, in the province of Messina, the seaside town of Taormina is Sicily’s Saint-Tropez, boasting heritage sites, secluded beaches and luxury shopping. You can visit its medieval centre, suspended 300 metres above sea level, where terraces offer a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. Another vestige from its past are the ruins of the Greco-Roman theatre. This extremely well-preserved site attracts visitors who are fascinated by the natural beauty of the area which overlooks a turquoise bay.
Arrival 13/8/2025 early morning
Disembarkation 13/8/2025 at 8:00 am
The whole of the Maltese capital Valletta is UNESCO World Heritage listed and occupies a peninsula in the north-east of the island. You can visit the Grandmasters palace decorated with coats of arms and frescoes. Saint-John’s cathedral and the ramparts which have guarded the city since the 16th century are also among the most emblematic sites of the city. Arranged in terraces, the Barrakka Gardens will punctuate your promenade with a green and floral experience.

After the short walk (15 minutes) from the port to the Old Town you will start with the walking portion of the tour.
The Old Town of Split is built on and around the spectacular Roman Palace erected by the Roman Emperor Diocletian (born in Salona - todays Solin) in the 4th century. The walking tour starts with a visit of the Palace on the ground gallery that is still very well preserved. It offers a good view at how the life in the Palace was organised.
You will also visit the very interesting Cathedral of St. Duje (patron saint of the city). According to medieval sources, Archbishop John of Ravenna purified in 650 the mausoleum of Diocletian by getting rid of its idols and founded the Cathedral whose bell tower is now the symbol of Split.
The Cathedral is built on the remains of an ancient shrine and is supposed to be the oldest in the world. A visit will also be made to the charming Temple of Jupiter, turned into the baptistery by Christians. Observe the front panel or the ceiling with grotesque faces. Cross the Palace of the southern gate to the North door and discover the ramparts and the immense "statue of Gregory of Nin" by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.

From the quay, you will board your coach for a 30-minute trip towards the mediaeval town of Trogir.
Trogir has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It is considered to be the most beautiful mediaeval town in Dalmatia. Its old town dates back to the 3rd century BC and is home to many paved streets, palaces, a Romanesque cathedral and the Pinacotheca. Its narrow alleyways have not changed since their initial configuration and, as you explore them, you will really feel like you are stepping back in time.
Once arrived, you will see its principal monuments, including a visit to the famous Cathedral of St. Lawrence.
The Cathedral of St. Lawrence in Trogir, dating back to the 13th century, is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Croatia, along with that of Šibenik. A large part of the cathedral was also built in the 17th century. This unusual construction with three naves and three semi-circular apses dominates the entire town. The main portal, carved by local artist Radovan in the 13th century, is world famous. You will be able to admire the main portal, a masterpiece of Croatian Romanesque art, and the baptistery, which is a synthesis of gothic and Renaissance styles. Inside, you will discover the Renaissance-style burial chapel.

The national park contains the main sites of the island, in particular Malo Jezero and Veliko Jezero, two lakes connected by a channel at the western end of Mljet. The latter communicates with the sea through the Soline channel, so that both lakes have a low tide.
A Benedictine monastery stands on an islet in the middle of Veliko Jezero. You can reach it by taking a boat to the islet. Built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style, the monastery has been altered many times since then and now boasts Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Once you have visited the monastery, you take the boat and disembark opposite the monastery for a walk along the Great Lake or for a swim in one of the two lakes.

Dubrovnik, despite a devastating earthquake in 1667 and the ravages of many wars, is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Begin your walk with a stroll along Dubrovnik's Stradun, a wide pedestrian way lined with shops and cafés and a remarkable number of historic buildings and monuments. At its western end, you arrive at the Franciscan Monastery whose cloister ranks among the most inspiring sites of the city. The Monastery houses the oldest pharmacy in Europe, and third oldest pharmacy in the world, founded in 1317. It is still active and still offers salves manufactured according to recipes passed from generation to generation.
A short walk from the monastery brings you to the Cathedral of the Assumption. Built in the 18th century on the ruins of a church destroyed in the 1667 earthquake, its design is surprisingly simple. But it is a treasure trove of gold and silver reliquaries and several priceless paintings, including a polyptych over the main altar of the Assumption of the Virgin by Titian.
As you make your way back to the pier, your guide will point out some of Dubrovnik's most important cultural monuments — Sponza Palace, identifiable by its gallery of arcades, the Church of Saint Blaise, built in 1715 in Baroque style, and the richly detailed Onofrio Fountain, fed by an aqueduct built in the 15th century that brings potable water to the city from a spring 7 miles away.
The final visit of your tour is at the Rector's Palace. This Gothic-Renaissance structure overlooking the harbor is now a cultural history museum that tells the story of Dubrovnik when it was the capital of the proud Republic of Ragusa, a maritime power that rivalled Venice through much of the later Middle Ages.

Embark on an unforgettable excursion to Boka Bay, a true natural gem nestled in the heart of Montenegro. The itinerary includes spectacular views of the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks, a Baroque church perched on one of the two islands that line the Bay of Kotor. According to local legend, this islet was gradually created over the centuries by sailors, who, after every successful voyage, placed a rock in the bay. Over time, an island emerged, symbolizing their dedication and community spirit.
Directly across from the picturesque village of Perast, the church on the islet houses an impressive collection of 68 paintings by the 17th-century artist Tripo Kokolja, a native of Perast. Among his masterpieces is The Death of the Virgin, a monumental work stretching ten meters in length, captivating in its grandeur and beauty.
After visiting the islet, your journey continues to Perast, a town with a tumultuous history. Once known as the "defender of the bay," Perast played a crucial strategic role in the region. Its inhabitants, trained from an early age in the art of defense, resisted attacks from African pirates who plundered their riches and enslaved their people. They later bravely fought against the Turks and even came to the aid of neighboring villages. As you stroll through the picturesque streets of Perast, your guide will share fascinating stories that have shaped this town.
Finally, let yourself be carried away by the tranquility of the return journey, admiring the breathtaking panoramas of Boka Bay. This moment of relaxation will offer you the chance to discover the coastal villages of Prcanj, Dobrota, and other small towns, while enjoying unparalleled views of this exceptionally beautiful region.
A unique experience blending history, legends, and breathtaking landscapes.

Stroll around Lecce, the “Baroque Florence”, and discover the countless churches, palaces and monuments carved out of this soft and almost golden limestone that gives the city a glowing look, like the chubby cherubins that decorate its façades.
A veritable open-air museum, Lecce is a microcosm of Baroque splendours. The cherubins, gargoyles, plant patterns, columns and capitals, each more extravagant than the last, are legion here - to the extent that the city lays claim to its own style, the “Barocco Leccese”. It has to be said that the sculptors and architects of the 16th and 17th centuries had a field day with the regional stone, a marvel of malleability and delicacy.
During a guided tour, discover its Roman heritage on the Piazza Sant’Oronzo, where the palazzos, church and Roman amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century try to outdo each other with their beauty. Then head off to explore the Centro Storico historic centre. Its cobbled streets and shady squares are teeming with incredible rococo treasures, including the Basilica of Santa Croce – with a constellation of sublime ornaments -that you will able to visit, and the Governor’s Palace whose façades you will admire.
A few metres away, the Piazza del Duomo, in spectacular golden monochrome, proudly displays a cathedral, its bell tower and the archbishop’s palace, making it one of Italy’s most beautiful squares. The exploration of the city centre ends with some free time to discover the city at your own pace, before getting back on the bus for Otranto.

Day 2 - Venice
After breakfast, you will leave your hotel by boat to explore some of the hidden gardens of the city, learn their history and find out what prompted the locals to create gardens in such a challenging environment. Gardens in Venice come as a surprise: although many of the palaces have their own small, private garden, when wandering around it is easy to get the impression that Venice is a city of stone.
The first stop is Nani Bernardo Palace, opened especially for a private visit. Designed by the architect Vittoria and commissioned the Bernardo family, the palace was built in the mid-16th century with a beautiful Italian garden. On the other side of the Grand Canal, you will then enjoy a private visit of Palazzo Malipiero.
Initially built in a Byzantine style, it has undergone some modifications over the centuries. The adjacent Italian-style garden with a view of the Grand Canal, a rarity in Venice, makes it even more distinctive.
Like many others, this garden was created in the late 18th century, when the large palace gardens situated on the outskirts of the city disappeared because of residential and industrial development.
You will then be transferred by boat to Sant’Erasmo. While this is the largest island in the Venetian lagoon, it is only sparsely populated. For years this has been Venice’s countryside, the agricultural zone which produces the fruit and vegetables consumed by the city-dwellers. Its artichokes are particularly renowned. You will take a walk through the vineyards of the Cantina Orto di Venezia estate, before tasting three vintages of locally produced Orto, a white wine full of this special island’s unique character. This wine is made from ancient Italian grape varieties; the vines are cultivated using traditional and eco-friendly methods.
Driven by their passion and tenacity, the Thoulouze family have managed to recreate the ancestral methods of drainage using the natural tides of the lagoon.
Orto is a white wine with a high mineral content and a flavour that reflects its terroir. It can be drunk on any occasion but goes especially well with the products of the Venetian lagoon: fish, artichokes, and asparagus. It was recently named the best Italian Malvasia vintage.
After the visit, you will take a boat ride to Mazzorbo, a rural island connected to Burano by a wooden pedestrian bridge. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. During afternoon, you will enjoy leisure time in Burano.
You will return to your hotel by boat, to enjoy the rest of the day and evening at your leisure.
Day 3 - Venice
Breakfast at your hotel, morning at leisure and check-out.
You will then visit a tavern to enjoy a cooking lesson and learn the secrets of Venetian cuisine. With the chef’s guidance and supervision, you will create typical local dishes as you learn more about the culture and cuisine of the region. At the end of the lesson, you will eat what you prepared and toast to this memorable experience.
You will then be transferred by boat to the pier of Venice to embark on board your ship.

After the walking tour you will head back to the ship. If you wish to spend some time on your own, you can visit the colourful open market (largest on the coast) or spend some time in the town before returning to the ship.

From the quay, you will board your coach for a 30-minute trip towards the mediaeval town of Trogir.
Trogir has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It is considered to be the most beautiful mediaeval town in Dalmatia.
