Off the west coast of Graham Land, Liard Island, 24 km long and 11 km wide, lies north of Hanusse Bay, recognisable by its V-shape. Discovered and named by Jean-Baptiste Charcot during the second French Antarctic expedition, which he led from 1908-1910 aboard the Pourquoi-Pas? the mountainous island, which rises to 1,000 metres, is home to Adélie penguins.
